When Seth turned he saw the slaves had stopped a few paces short of him. They were kneeling, their eyes reflecting the strong glare of the floodlights.
âAngylesau,â one of them said.
And now they had their hands clasped, some leaning forward to touch their heads to the ground.
It was like the ghosts from before. When Seth had saved the Anglo-Saxons from a Viking massacre. Those families had stared at him in awe.
Angylesau. Seth knew that it meant angel. These men thought he was an angel.
But still, Sethâs mind was scrambled. What should he do? He could hear Nadiya calling him, her voice anxious. Rosaâs distressed barking. The rattle of the locks.
And then one of the slaves walked up to him, bent before him, then cupped his hands, like Seth had done for Nadiya.
Seth couldnât believe it. His heart was hammering so hard that waves of sickness were pulsing through his body. But now he could see the first of the Roman guards striding towards him, a long leather whip lashing its way through the slaves.
Screams.
Shouts.
The sound of flesh tearing under the snap of the whip.
Seth looked into the dark eyes of the slave whose hands were cupped to offer him a leg up.
âIâll be back,â he told him.
The slave said something in reply. Something Seth could not understand. Then he put his foot in the slaveâs broad hands and felt strong arms lift him up.
He gripped the top of the fence and pushed himself over and down to the ground on the other side.
Rosa leaped up, nipping at him.
âHow did you do that?â Nadiya stared at him.
âOne of the slaves gave me a leg up.â
âWhat!?â
âIâm serious. They helped me.â
âOK â¦â Nadiya said. âSo, er ⦠what next?â
âWe arm ourselves. Then we come back.â
Nadiya stared at Seth, puzzled.
âArm ourselves with knowledge.â Seth smiled. âNot weapons.â
âYou mean history,â Nadiya said. âNow youâre talking.â
